Getting There:
Hornby Island is situated between the British Columbia mainland and Vancouver
Island approximately 80 miles north-west of Vancouver.
Most visitors arrive by
car using the BC Ferry system. It can also be reached by floatplane from the
South Terminal at Vancouver International Airport or by a scheduled flight from
Vancouver to Comox. |

1. Travel to Vancouver Island:
Several ferry connections are availabe between the Vancouver area Mainland and
Vancouver Island. Ferries depart regularily from Horseshoe Bay (just North of
Vancouver) and from Twawwassen (just south of Vancouver) to Departure Bay
(Nanaimo) and Swartz Bay (Victoria). Reservations are recommended on holiday
weekends and during summer months.

Comox airport is accessible by Air Canada, Central Mountain Air, Pacific Coastal,
and West Jet. Car rentals are available from the airport and the Buckley Bay
Ferry terminal is a 30 minute drive south.
A water taxi is available from the Comox Marina. Before your flight you would
make arrangements with the Water Taxi for a pick up at the Comox Marina. The
Water Taxi can be reached at 250-335-2321. You would get to the Comox Marina
from the Comox Airport by local taxi. This trip would take about an hour and a
half from Vancouver airport to the dock on Hornby Island.

Travel by floatplane is the fastest and most expensive way to get here. You can
call Harbour Air Seaplanes to charter a plane from the South Terminal to Hornby
Island. They can be reached Toll Free at 1-800-665-0212.

2. Drive to Buckley Bay:
Once on Vancouver Island, there are two routes that will get you to Buckley Bay.
The quickest route is via Highway 19 (Inland Island Highway), take exit 101 to
Buckley Bay. The oceanside route 19A (the Old Island Highway) is an alternative
route along the waterfront and through scenic ocean side towns. This route takes
and estimated 1/2 hour extra of driving time and leads directly to Buckley Bay.

3. Ferry to Denman Island:
A ten minute ferry crossing from Buckley Bay brings you to Denman Island. A
short drive across the island brings you to Gravelly Bay where you catch the ferry
to Hornby Island. Just follow the signs and traffic to Gravelly Bay.
Note that payment for ferry crossing is payed at the Buckley Bay terminal for all
crossings including return fare. The terminal only accepts cash and credit card.

4. Ferry to Hornby Island:
From Gravelly Bay, another ten minute ferry ride brings you to Hornby Island.

5. From the ferry landing to Serendipity Cottage:
From the ferry you will find yourself on Shingle Spit road which
will soon veer right and becomes Central Road (the main road around
the island). Travel on Central until you come to a four way stop
where the Co-op and Ringside market are, take a right on Central
Road (remember it's the main road “around” the island). follow Central
Road for approximately 2 kms and take the second road on the left,
Sandpiper Road. The sign is not always visible. Take the first road
on the right, Arthurs Road. A brief drive on Arthurs takes you to
Paul Road, can only turn left. Serendipity Cottage is the second
house on the left, 4975 Paul Road.

Special Note:
The last ferry from Denman to Hornby Island departs daily at 6:35 pm, except
Friday there is a later ferry sailing at 10:30 pm. This means you need to catch the
6 pm ferry (10 pm on Fridays) from Buckley Bay to Denman Island in order to be
on the last ferry to Hornby Island. |
